Our Dream Trailer Is in the Works—and Out of Our Budget
Due to Start Production in 2024, The Self-Propelled Popup Luxury Trailer L1 by Lightship Is Virtually Perfect
Our friend, Charles Hood, tipped us off to this beauty this week. Wow! This is the perfect trailer for us in every way but one (budget).
Let’s recap what makes the Lightship L1 perfect for us.
It is self-propelled, designed to be towed by an EV like the Rivian R1T we have ordered. With up to 80 kWh, it should be good for 400 miles per day behind a tow vehicle—without reducing the tow vehicle’s range!
It is extremely aerodynamic when towing. The hard sides drop down, leaving the vehicle about as high as a tall pick-up truck at 6’ 9”—much lower than the 10-foot height that is so common among trailers. Once parked, the top lifts to be almost 10 feet tall.
With 3 kW of solar, it can power the activities inside the trailer indefinitely while camping. Combined with the massive batteries, a remote camping or “boondocking” vacation will be constrained only by water and sewer needs.
The all-electric appliances eliminate the need to use any fossil fuels.
At 27 feet in length, the trailer is quite large—bigger than anything on our shortlist.
That is an amazing dream vehicle for us. Efficient. Roomy. Range-extending. Solar powered.
If you don’t live in the trailer full time, you could park it in the sun, and the batteries would be full and ready for the road all the time. On a long road trip—for which the trailer is designed—you’d need to charge the batteries from the grid. The solar would supply plenty for all the operation of the appliances but would barely make a dent in charging the batteries in a single day.
“Beginning” at a price of $125,000, it is a great way for folks with greater resources than us to travel with a lower carbon footprint and most of the comforts of home.
So, now we know what we’ll be missing. Thanks, Charles! But we’ll enjoy dreaming!
Devin and Gail, you have seen how this works - someone designs the Rolls Royce. Other companies watch how it sells - or does not because of the price. Then they create a nicer, more functional camping trailer that everyone else may buy and use.
Wow, that is definitely a great trailer and has a price tag that reflects that. In addition to the cost, I wonder if it has window covers as sometimes other campers are in sight even when boondock camping. I hope you find something else to support your life adventure!
